Basic Poker Terms

The Hand: a hand represents to the combination of cards held by the poker player.

Play: A single game action.

Pot: The chips or money bet by players during a hand is referred to as the pot. Each poker hand is a contest for the pot.

Tie Hand: If two poker hands have the same hand values then it is a split pot.

Ante: This is the money or chips each player puts into the pot before the cards are delt. An ante is also known as blind bet.

Rake: poker rake is the commission fee taken by a cardroom operating a poker game. In most cases it is five to ten percent of the pot in each poker hand.

Showdown: This is the final act to determining who the winner of the pot is after all betting rounds have been completed.
