Omaha Poker Rules: You Should Know Them
Slowly but surely, Omaha poker is becoming quite the popular version of poker and while the rules are similar to Texas Hold ‘Em poker, there are a few differences. In this article, we will go through those rules and let you know exactly how to play the game … get ready!
First, you must know that there can only be up to ten players at a table at a time. So any extra players may have to start another game or wait until the next one is started. Next, similar to Texas Hold ‘Em, Omaha poker deals with community cards, the players are dealt four cards and there are four betting rounds and finally a rotating dealer.
Now, if you are a complete beginner, you may not be familiar with a few of the terms laid out above and that is what we are here for! Firstly, the community cards that are used in both Omaha and Texas Hold ‘Em poker is cards that are used in conjunction with the players hand, although these cards are left faceup on the table.
The four cards that are dealt to each player are four cards that will be used as the player’s private hand. This is very similar to Texas Hold ‘Em. The four betting rounds is just like Texas Hold ‘Em, although in Omaha, you have the pre-flop, flop, turn and river.
And finally, the rotating dealer is just as it states. The dealer for each and every round rotated from seat to seat, unless of course you are playing at a casino.
So now that you have the basics of the terms down of Omaha, we can now move onto the rules of the game. The rules are very important, whether you are playing for fun or you are attempting to play professionally. Just remember to keep them in mind and you should be fine!
One of the very obvious differences in the rules of Omaha over Texas Hold ‘Em is the fact that each and every player gets dealt four cards instead of two, now the players can only use two cards from their hand in conjunction with the community cards to make up their entire hand, but they get more of a choice.
So now that you have some of the basic rules down, let’s go ahead and go through a came ourselves so you can learn all about it and be sure that you have it down when you play for real.
First, the hand is going to be dealt clockwise around the table. If you are having a rotating dealer for every round, you may want to have the players choose cards in order to pick who deals first. For instance, the person with the highest-value card will be the one that deals first and it goes counterclockwise from there.
Once you have the dealer set, the two players to the left of the dealer are going to be the big blind and the little blind. The person immediately to the left of the dealer is the big blind and the person to the left of the big blind is the little blind. These two people are very important as they are the people that are going to be starting off the betting.
The blinds are typically a representation of the stakes of the game. For instance, in a limit game, the blinds are half of the limits. In a no-limit game with the total buy-in being one hundred times the size of the big blind, the little blind is half of that.
Now that you have picked the dealer, you have the blinds set; it is finally time to get down to the cards! Starting with the little blind and continuing around the table, the dealer deals out four cards one at a time until every single player has four cards face down.
Once every player has all of their cards, it is now time for the pre-flop. This is where the very first betting round comes into play and the starting bet will be placed by the big blind. Now, if you are the big blind, you have the choice of either folding, calling or raising the minimum bet.
If you plan on raising the bet, there are a few things you will need to know. For instance, in a fix-limit poker game, you can increase your bet to double the amount of the current limit. For instance, if you are in a $5/$9 limit game, you can call the big blind of five dollars and raise it up to nine dollars.
If you are in a no-limit game, raising the stakes has no upper limit, but it must be equal to or larger than the size of the previous bet. Just keep that in mind when you are raising bets rather than calling them.
Now the betting will continue clockwise around the table, each player having the option to either fold, call or raise the bet. After the pre-flop is finished, we now move onto The Flop. This is where the dealer will place on card facedown (this is the burn card) and will then flip over three addition cards faceup on the table. These are the community cards that can be used by all of the players in addition to their hand.
The Flop round is also where the second betting round comes into play and it is exactly like the first round. The Turn is the next round and this is when the dealer will burn through another card and then place another one in faceup on the table for another community card. Another betting round goes around the table and then The River turn happens.
Finally, the River is the last betting round and the one where the dealer will burn through one final card and add the last one to the pile of community cards. Any of the players that are remaining in The River round will go to a showdown with one another. Usually, there are not that many players left in this round as many people have already folded, so keep that in mind if you plan on sticking in the round.
An Omaha showdown is when the players need to make the best possible five-card hand with what they have in their private hand as well as with the community cards on the table. Whoever has the best hand and reveals it will win the pot, so be sure that you aren’t bluffing in this round. The showdown round is definitely the one where you do not want to be caught in a bluff, but if those community cards can save you, you may be able to walk away with the pot.
After the showdown round, the game is over, the pot is given out and finally, the game can restart itself. Poker is all about being quick, fast and easy and that is exactly what Omaha is! So just be sure to keep some of these rules in mind and you will soon be winning money off your friends in no time! This is a great game to play anywhere and is definitely one to keep in mind!
